An employee for the City of Steinbach was airlifted to the hospital following an incident in an excavated hole at the corner of Lilac Bay and McKenzie Avenue.

The 911 call came in at 2:30 PM and City Communications Coordinator Heather Chambers Ewen they were doing routine work when the incident occurred.

“They were removing an obsolete t-line out of our waterworks system. As part of that work, we were excavating, we did have an employee that was in the excavated hole, there was an incident and obviously, there was an injury and at this time we obviously called authorities, they came in and assessed then they contacted the other authorities.”

The Steinbach Fire Department’s Tech Team performed the rescue and extracted the employee out of the hole, which is estimated to be about eight to ten feet deep, where he was then airlifted to Winnipeg via STARS Air Ambulance. Chambers Ewen adds she couldn’t specify on the incident itself or on the extent of his injuries.

As of 4 PM, McKenzie Avenue West and Lilac Bay were reopened to traffic.
