Steinbach Fly-In Golf Course shuts down after overnight flooding
A local business is speaking out after heavy rain and flooding forced them to close temporarily. Rob Fast, groundskeeper at the Steinbach Fly-In Golf Course, says he has worked at the club for 48 years and has witnessed many floods. He wants answers as to why it keeps happening. The Fly-In is closed today and is expected to remain closed for the next four days. “My bridges are all floating downstream and it's coming over Park Road, it's coming over Old Tom,” says Fast. “The creek that runs through here, it takes water all the way from Friedensfeld, all the way down Hirschfeld. And it's kind of out of control.” Fast adds that the flooding is hurting their business. “We're having such a great year. And yes, we have to deal with big rain events because we have a creek running through here, we understand that.” He is frustrated by the impact the water is having on Steinbach. “Where is our city's plan for a floodway or a drainage project? We've got all this water running through town, through three tributaries and Steinbach Creek and there's just water everywhere, but there's no plan.” He says the city needs to take action. “Now, I know this is a conversation that always happens, after the fact. It always happens after the rainfall. But this is not a rare event, but there's a lot of flooding going on and a lot of flooded basements, and there has to be a drainage master plan.” With files from Adi Loewen
