La Broquerie Habs are champions of the CRJHL
After years of waiting, the La Broquerie Habs have climbed to the top of the mountain, and after a dominating playoff run, are champions of the Capital Region Junior Hockey League. No better feeling "It's awesome," President and owner of the Habs, Ken Tallaire said just moments after the final buzzer. "We haven't had a senior team in a long time. It's special for our town. It's packed in here today. The town came out for it. They're so excited for us to win. I'm so excited for our team, we have three 21-year-olds, and last year, if it wasn't for those guys, we wouldn't even have had a team here this year. So it's awesome that they win right away. It's just unbelievable. We improved throughout the year, and we knew at the end of the year that we could win this thing. Beating St. Malo was a huge series. I mean, that was so exciting for both towns, and it was a fun time, that's for sure." Special group Throughout the year, Taillaire said that the team had something special about them. "A lot of character," he says with a proud smile. "Like, the guys learned so much last year. Even halfway through the year, how much they have improved and how much they have improved this year. Now they knew what Junior B hockey was all about. And our guys just got better and better. So much character, just everything changed this year. You know, the noise in the dressing room, on the bench, guys, there was leadership everywhere compared to last year, that's for sure." A bit part of what made this group so great was the coaching staff, people Tallaire says were the perfect fit. "Awesome, right? You know, three young guys who love the game and love the community. Dan Taillefer played and won in junior A. Most of these guys, they've never coached before. They might have coached their kids in novice, and that's about it. But, you know, they knew how to coach, and they learned, and it's just unbelievable. Like, to win in their second year is just crazy. It's unbelievable." For the community Every time the team took to the ice, Taillaire says they did so with the entire community behind them, something he says makes this championship even sweeter. "La Broquerie, we breathe hockey, and we've been missing it for a while now. On Facebook, everyone's just excited. Go Habs Go posters. It's just unbelievable to see these people, especially our older people, our elders, who were supporting our senior team when I used to play 30 years, 20 years later, they're here again just as excited as I was 20 years ago." Start of something Looking into the future, this might be just the start of something really exciting for La Broquerie hockey, according to Taillaire. "It's great because now people know we're a winning team, obviously. We know people are going to come here and play next year. There's people lining up already. We know we're going to have more players next year, and some guys are coming back that are from the town playing hockey somewhere else, and they told us already they're coming back next year. Now, when you have a winning team, people see what we have, and more people are going to start coming to play hockey."
