Hanover Firefighters extinguished a structure fire in Blumenort Sunday evening.

Fire Chief Paul Wiebe says at around 8:30 PM his crews were dispatched to a home-based business located along Center Avenue. The burning shop, he notes, was detached from the owner’s residence.

“When the guys arrived there was fire inside," states Wiebe. "So they entered, extinguished the fire, and there was some fire extension to the roof so they extinguished that too.” He says the scene was under control in roughly an hour, but crews remained nearby, monitoring the blaze until midnight.

When the smoke had settled, Wiebe says the home was unscathed. However, the shop was less lucky.

“The building has significant damage but it is still standing,” he notes. “I guess it will be up to the owner and his insurance whether or not it is a total loss.”

The cause of the fire and the corresponding damage estimate are still under investigation. Wiebe expects that information will be made available later today.
