Oil Caps offence proves to be too much in 8-4 win over Steinbach, Virden leads series 2-0
Steinbach dug themselves into an early hole, and despite the effort, they couldn't climb out of it, eventually falling to the Virden Oil Capitals in game two, 8-4, and now trails the series 2-0. First period Wanting a better start to the game, the Pistons came out strong, putting pucks in deep and working in the zone. All that work would be undone as the Oil Capitals once again opened the scoring. A power play goal made it 1-0 for the visitors within the first six minutes of the game. Virden would add to it a few minutes later, scoring off a bang-bang play in the offensive zone, making it a 2-0 game. That lead would grow to 3-0 as the Oil Caps put a puck on goal that banked off a Pistons defender and in, giving them a 3-0 lead for the second consecutive game in the first period. Steinbach would get a little closer, scoring off the energy caused by a big hit. Luke Bogart stepped up and made a big-time check on one of the Virden forwards at their blueline, and as play continued, Zhenya Miles drove the net and converted off a great feed from Jackson Kostiuk, cutting the lead to 3-1. For Miles, it's his third of the playoffs, while Kostiuk and Marek Miller had the assists. Shots in the period were 12-11 Virden, and the score also favoured the Oil Caps, 3-1. Second period The energy from the late first-period goal would not carry over, as the Oil Capitals scored next, restoring their three-goal lead, 4-1. A seeing-eye point shot from Liam Doyle helped Steinbach claw a little closer, as the 20-year-old defender sifted a shot through traffic for his 6th of the playoffs, making it a 4-2 game. Miles and Logan Mehl had the assists. Penalties would be the story for the rest of the period. Time after time, the Pistons cut a path to the penalty box, which allowed the Oil Caps to control the clock, control the game, and keep pressure on. There was a glimmer of hope when, on a five-on-three, it was Steinbach who sprang out on a shorthanded partial breakaway. While the chance and the rebound were turned away, the play continued back up ice and in the process, a Piston and an Oil Capital went hard into goalie Chris Quizi, sending the goaltender to the ice in a heap. Jeff Eidse raced out to tend to Quizi, who took several moments to gain his composure, but was able to stay in the game. The result was Steinbach taking yet another penalty, giving Virden an extended power play, even more so throughout the back half of what was close to the entire period. Virden would finally convert on a power play chance, extending the lead to 5-2 in the final minute of the second. That's the way the score would go into the final frame. Third period Luke Bogart scored his first career playoff goal on a power play from Hoffman and Paronuzzi, to once again bring Steinbach to within two, but that would be as close as they would get. Three straight goals by Virden sealed any hope for a Steinbach comeback, as they ran up the score to 8-3. Paronuzzi would score late to make it 8-4, but that would be it. Steinbach trails in the series 2-0, going to Virden for game three on Tuesday.
